Plenty of colour, a few surprises on fashion scene

LOS ANGELES —Judging by the fashion show leading up to 17th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards at the Shrine on Sunday, you’d never know it was cold outside. The red carpet was bursting with colour, glamour and over-the-top excitement.

Fourteen-year-old Hailee Steinfeld, nominated for her role in True Grit, cast sunshine all around in a pink and orange striped Prada gown with a square neckline. She wasn’t the only teenager on the carpet.

When Modern Family cast member Ariel Winter stopped by in a ’50s-inspired off-white Luisa Beccaria dress with black belt, she was big smiles.

“I just met Jesse Eisenberg and I flipped out,” she said. “I love The Social Network.”

She’s not alone.

Moments later there were chants for The Social Network star coming from the crowd. Sure enough there was a tuxedoed Eisenberg, in Dolce Gabbana, hurrying down the centre of the carpet. His co-star was more amicable when it came to the shouts of fans.

Justin Timberlake, in Simon Spurr, sporting a shaved head, waved and signed autographs. Also warming up to the bleachers was The Fighter cast, including Christian Bale, who cut his hair since the Golden Globes, and Amy Adams, in a form-hugging white Herve Leroux gown with all-over ruching.

A very pregnant Natalie Portman was also in white, covering her baby bump with a strapless Azzaro.

Colour was certainly not absent from this celebrity fashion show.

There were shades of green and blue in the printed Louis Vuitton gown worn by Claire Danes. Jane Lynch passed by in ruffles of lavender by Ali Rahimi. Sofia Vergara shot by in electric blue Roberto Cavalli. Wearing a navy blue vintage Chanel, an elegant Dianna Agron showed off her bejewelled bracelet to her Glee beau Chord Overstreet. The Good Wife star Julianna Margulies was all sophistication in her red strapless Yves Saint Laurent gown, telling reporters backstage, “As much as I love fashion, I find the red carpet daunting.”

She wasn’t the only one in red. Tina Fey wore an Oscar de la Renta dress with appliqued flowers. And Mila Kunis impressed with a Alexander McQueen chiffon in shades of red.

It’s no wonder Annette Bening, wearing a Grecian-style gold sequin Tony Ward Couture gown, didn’t bother stopping by as the show was about to start.

Of course that didn’t stop The King’s Speech actress Helena Bonham Carter. When the BBC shouted out to her from behind the hedges, the British actress rushed over to the camera wearing a Marc Jacobs two-tone black and white dress covered in lace flowers and matching shoes (unlike her Golden Globes footwear).

Surprisingly, there were very conservative gowns worn by actresses who have been known for taking chances. January Jones, who was quite revealing in a red number at the Golden Globes, chose a Carolina Herrera two-tone with jewel neckline and cap sleeves. Also in a high neckline was Nicole Kidman who favoured a Nina Ricci black gown with lace inserts at the bustline and back.

The Hills star-turned fashion designer debuted her LC by Lauren Conrad line in 2009 and said she is ‘excited’ at the prospect of showing her wares in the Big Apple.

She told Young Hollywood Studios: ‘This upcoming New York fashion week I’m hoping to show. I’ve done LA before and never New York, so that’s exciting.’

The 24-year-old added that she had been dying her hair brown for months before anyone noticed.

‘I’ve been changing my hair over the last six months, I’ve been slowly going darker and it’s only the last time people have noticed,’ she said. ‘I think it’s because I don’t do red carpets very often so no one noticed. I change my hair every two months.’

‘Insulated fashion’ with Sachi lunch bags

Sure, we all know bringing your lunch to work has its benefits — from trimming your waistline and your food budget to protecting the environment by avoiding disposable packaging. But who wants to schlep your culinary creations in a recycled grocery bag? Splurge on a stylish lunch bag you’ll feel good about carrying.

Sachi bags, which aren’t a huge splurge at $15 to $27, are insulated bags designed to be carried as totes or handbags. The site, at sachi-bags.com, calls them “insulated fashion.” Designs range from quilted handbags to canvas totes to messenger bags, plus a line of wine carriers designed to both protect your bottles and keep them cool.

The only problem, from a shopping aspect, is there’s no shipping information on the main website. To view shipping costs, you must add something to your cart and complete the address information before shipping options and costs will pop up. For one bag, the cost for UPS ground was more than $10. The solution? Actually, there are two.

Option one: Order with a friend (or a few!) and split shipping costs.

Option two: Check out what Sachi styles are available on Amazon.com, , and many are shipped free with super saver shipping.

The Herald’s Bruce Lerch took in a rare Sunday night makeup game in the Hockomock League:

An aggressive offensive system, a sophomore goaltender making an impact in his first season as the starter, and a seemingly tireless pair of penalty killers have Mansfield sitting atop the Hockomock League’s Kelley-Rex Division.

Rich Shipman turned aside 23 shots while Andy Anastos and Brendan Murphy led a unit that killed off 5-of-6 penalties in the first two periods as Mansfield made a loud statement by knocking off perennial league power Franklin, the Herald’s top-ranked team in Division 2, 4-1, Sunday night at Pirelli Rink in Franklin.

“I think we’ve been playing this way all along,” said Hornets coach Rick Anastos. “We’ve been into a lot of hostile rinks and come out with some victories. We play an aggressive system and I just think our kids played the system to a T and we played a pretty good game.”

Without the work of Andy Anastos and Murphy on special teams and the play of Shipman between the pipes, this result easily could have been much different. Penalties have plagued the Hornets in recent days, and they took six over the first 28 minutes of play.

After the Hornets killed off the first four, all in the first period, Franklin (9-2, 7-1 Hockomock) finally broke through with just two seconds remaining on the fifth when Mark Teehan swooped in on a loose puck to right of Shipman and jammed it home at 2:24 of the second.

Mansfield (11-1-1, 8-1) responded with 3:27 left in the second as Mike Blackman tipped a blast from the point off the stick of Conor McGowan to tie it at 1-1.

In the third stanza, the Hornets played a more disciplined game while the Panthers went to the penalty box three times in the first five minutes. Junior defenseman Jason Collins gave Mansfield the lead for good with a beautiful shot from just inside the top of the left circle for a power play goal.

The Hornets kept up the pressure, and Tom Hurley potted the insurance goal with a backhanded swat of a shot by Greg McCarthy that caromed off the back boards and bounced out to Hurley, who got enough on the shot to get the puck through before Franklin goalie Ryan Geary (14 saves) could scramble over to cover the post.

Meanwhile, Shipman turned aside back-to-back scoring chances by Franklin’s Ryan Garland and Thomas Carlow in tight, stoned Nick Bertoni on a breakaway down the left wing, and covered a jam attempt in the crease by Mark Robbins all in the final 2:19 of play.

“At the end of the first period in the locker room, we came together and got our discipline straight and just went out there as a team,” Shipman said. “My teammates did a a really good job of picking up people and keeping Franklin out of my way so I could see the puck very well.”

Anastos also had praise for young netminder.

“(Rich) has worked really really hard. Last year he was the backup and didn’t see much time but he’s been in every camp you could possibly think of,” he said. “He is really committed and extremely dedicated to playing goal and you can see it. Technique-wise, he’s really sharp, and his confidence is huge.

Blackman added an empty-net goal, his second of the game, with two seconds to play to cap the scoring.

“We needed to win this game to keep our hopes alive for the Hock,” Anastos said of the game’s importance. “We already qualified for the tournament so the guys are focused on winning the Hock and we had to win this game to make that possible. If we take care of business on Wednesday against Attleboro, it lines up for a really good game February 12 against Franklin in our rink.”

We moisturize our hair & skin so wouldn’t it be necessary to moisturize eyebrows to keep them healthy?biggrin Do you "moisturize" your eyebrows?

I have very thick, dark eyebrows, sometimes they feel dry so I put some lotion on or olive oil to keep them feeling soft.
