US close: Stocks jump, clothes retailers in fashion

LONDON (SHARECAST) – Stocks closed with good gains after some heartening jobs data and decent numbers from clothes retailers.
The ADP employment report has revealed 157,000 more private sector jobs for the month of June, a much greater rise than the 60,000 that had been expected.
Limited Brands, the company behind lingerie retailer Victorias Secret and department store Kohls were boosted by strong sales figures. American Apparel also rose on strong sales figures, while its ultra-trendy peer Urban Outfitters was boosted by Morgan Stanley upgrading the stock to overweight from equal-weight. Fashion group Gap also posted sales numbers that impressed the market. Is the consumer outlook brightening in the worlds largest economy?
That said, Cato slumped after the womens clothing retailers sales missed expectations.
The Dow Jones gained 93 points to 12,719, the SP 500 climbed 14 to 1,353 and the NASDAQ gained 40 points to 2,415.
In other sectors aircrafts parts group AAR rose after better than expected quarterly profits.
News Corporations stock was only slightly lower despite the media giant closing the News of the World, the biggest Sunday newspaper in Britain, following a raft of phone-tapping allegations.

Extend the fresh-from-the-beach look with soft, sand-colored makeup
The broad definition can mean a hint of shimmery champagne-colored eye shadow on one person, to a strong smoky brown eye liner on another. There are countless neutral-hued lipsticks, some with the bit of coral you might associate with a tropical beach. Others are more brown like the New England coastal dunes.
Menard often uses brown mascara instead of black during the daytime, which is softer and more relaxed looking. “You want ease, not high maintenance.”
However, she adds, your best colors might change as the summer moves along, especially if you are getting any natural tan. “Be aware of your skin tone,” Menard says. “If you are pale and fair, then soft brown isn’t nude on you — it can be a very strong color. … When I’m tan, even a light brown will look very different than it does in the winter.”
For those with darker skin tones, she recommends moving into more golden shades.
On the cheeks, you can go with a beige blush or even a bronzer, but use a light touch, says Menard. “A lot of people get scared when they hear ‘bronzed’ look, so ‘sandy’ is a good twist.”
There is the risk of a one-dimensional appearance with a toned-down palette, though. Celebrity makeup artist Ricky Wilson steers clear of a very matte look. He likes to blend complementary colors that remind him of glistening wet sand — a look that’s tonal but not monotone.
“You want neutral, not boring,” says Wilson.
He adds: “So many people associate summer beauty with oranges, blues and corals, but that’s not always the thing most women want to do. Women like browns and beiges.”
Romero Jennings, a MAC Cosmetics senior artist, says he’s into mineral makeup right now — especially the brand’s Mineral Mode shadow — which has natural reflective qualities. “It’s beige but not just beige, it’ll be beige with gold or silver or white or copper.”
One swirl of the brush in that sort of mixed shadow, and you have a rich, interesting lid look without working too hard, he says. It also works to add a layer of simple, sheer gloss over a honey-colored lipstick or even over a pencil-filled lip, which will last.
And, even if the colored lip begins to fade, the shadow gets rubbed in or bronzer loses a little luster, there is no rush to reapply because the colors really should be blending in with your skin and lips.
Wilson uses a beige lipstick (he’ll use Dior Route No. 298 if model Jessica Stam hasn’t taken it out of his bag) as a base, layered with Dior Addict Lip Glow, a “mood” lip balm with SPF 10 that changes in intensity of color depending on body heat.
“In the summer, you don’t want a feeling of a heavy matte lipstick, but you don’t want clumpy lip gloss streaks on your cheeks when the wind blows, but really neutral beige lips are hard, too. Most people have a natural rose tint to their lips and you just want to enhance that,” Wilson says.
The whole idea is to create — beach day or work day — that just-flushed glow you get from fun in the sun, he says, without, of course, getting any sort of real burn.
For the evening, it’s just a simple freshening up of the same colors — maybe using an eyelash curler to add a little drama without more makeup, recommends Jennings. “You want to look like you just came from the pool and just picking up a few things at the local market even if you’re going to the office or out to dinner. It’s easy-living, approachable makeup.”
Soft colors are inviting; they don’t send the same message as, for example, bright red lips or charcoal-gray smoky eyes, he adds. “This is a look that people can walk over to you and say, ‘You look great.’”
That easy appearance is the real beauty of summer, says Menard.
She’s even more no-muss, no-fuss when she goes to the beach: “For the beach itself, I wear sunblock. I’d stay away from any powders and shadows there. If you do go in the water, they will get cakey.”

Nicole Richie, John Varvatos joining NBC’s ‘Fashion Star’ as mentors
Jessica Simpson will be getting some celebrity company on Fashion Star.

NBC has announced former reality star Nicole Richie and fashion designer John Varvatos will join Simpson and serve as mentors to the fashion designers competing on Fashion Star, NBC’s new Project Runway-like reality competition series that will attempt to discover a designer who can become America’s next popular brand.
“Both [Richie and Varvatos] are trendsetters and tastemakers and their design skills and expertise will be invaluable to our contestants on the series,” NBC reality chief Paul Telegdy said in a statement.
Richie got her reality start appearing alongside Paris Hilton on five seasons of The Simple Life and has branched out into acting and designing in recent years by launching her own jewelry collection, footwear, eyewear, and handbags.
Varvatos began his career designing collections at Polo Ralph Lauren and Calvin Klein and launched his own men’s lifestyle brand company in 2000.
NBC announced Simpson’s Fashion Star participation last month and picked up the show in April.
“Jessica, Nicole, John and Elle make the most exciting team we have ever worked with on a reality television show and we are thrilled to feature such an extraordinary group of mentors and designers,” said Ben Silverman, executive producer of Fashion Star and CEO of Electus, one of the show’s production companies.
Hosted by former supermodel Elle Macpherson and produced by former Project Runway producers Jane Lipsitz and Dan Cutforth, Fashion Star will feature 14 unknown designers competing in a series of weekly fashion and business challenges that will end with one of them being crowned the next “Fashion Star” and winning a multi-million dollar contract to launch their own line in three of America’s largest retail stores.
Unlike Project Runway, which focuses on high-end women’s fashion, Fashion Star will target a variety of casual fashion including dresses, suits, lingerie, denim, bathing suits, shoes, and accessories. Home viewers will also have the ability to purchase each week’s winning designs both online and in stores the day after each episode airs.
Famous designers and buyers from American retailers will serve as judges for the competition, which will also provide the contestants with fashion industry experts to guide and mentor them.
Fashion Star is being produced by Lipstiz and Cutforth’s Magical Elves production company and Electus, and was created by Silverman, Rick Ringbakk of 5×5 Media, and E.J. Johnston and James Deutch of the Global Fashion Association.
Lipsitz, Cutforth, Silverman, and Macpherson — who currently serves as the host of Britain’s Next Top Model – are executive producing Fashion Star along with Ringbakk, Johnston and Deutch.
Lipsitz and Cutforth opted to leave Project Runway when The Weinstein Company, Runway’s owners, struck a deal to move the show from Bravo to Lifetime in 2008. Instead, they signed an exclusive first look development deal with NBCUniversal, the parent company of both NBC and Bravo.

Nicole Richie Will Reportedly Judge on ‘Fashion Star’
Photo: Julien M. Hekimian/Getty Images
Nicole Richie is said to be joining Jessica Simpson and Elle Macpherson on NBC’s forthcoming fashion reality show Fashion Star, reports “Page Six.” Like Simpson and Macpherson, Richie has parlayed her celebrity into an accessibly priced clothing line, Winter Kate, which fits Fashion Star‘s premise of focusing on clothes that can be sold at the mass consumer level. Sources say that Richie will act as a judge, which seems to conflict with NBC’s previous statements that the contestants will be chosen purely on the basis of viewer popularity; Americans will be able to vote for their favorite pieces by actually buying them online, thus proving their mass desirability (the show’s winner will be awarded with a multi-million-dollar contract with a yet-to-be-named major retailer). NBC hasn’t yet weighed in on the rumor, so chances are Richie might just be another “celebrity mentor” like Simpson, who will provide words of mass-marketing wisdom to the designer contestants. The show’s airdate is still undetermined.

CeliaCzerlinski handbags spring 2012 Berlin Fashion Week
CeliaCzerlinski sent their spring/summer 2012 collection down the Berlin Fashion Week runway today and the theme was colorful handbags. The backdrop to the stage featured several styles and colors of spring handbags while models strutted the catwalk carrying small, daytime clutches; which was an important trend in handbags for 2011 and will continue to be for 2012. The innovative handbag designer not only showed the fashion world new styles in the world of handbags, the show itself was a handbag lovers dream.
CeliaCzerlinski is known for designing luxurious handbags made from fine leather. The collection offers several innovative styles and takes on traditional handbag silhouettes. The spring/summer 2012 collection is no different, offering bold color choices and handbag styles unlike those of other designers.
CeliaCzerlinski created a daytime clutch in bold colors with a rounded flap closure which is on-trend for 2012 and easy to wear during the day or for evening occasions with semi-formal attire. The designer also created shoulder bags with a medium length shoulder strap and rounded flap closure; also in a variety of bold colors. CeliaCzerlinski showed an updated version of her single top handle satchel with shoulder strap which featured a hard, straight top handle that was structural and unique.
The unique double handle tote CeliaCzerlinski is showing for spring and summer 2012 appears to be a cross between a tote and hobo. The body of the handbag is soft like a slouchy hobo and the double top handles are metal circles carefully placed away from the edges of the handbag to allow for maximum slouch. This is most innovative piece of the collection; fusing styles together, yet offering a classic vibe that makes one want to wear this handbag for life.
The spring and summer collection by CeliaCzerlinski was shown in rose, winter white, yellow, turquoise, plum, navy, black, royal blue, beige and hot pink.
